Best Aspect Ratios For Web Video

Whether you are working in HD or SD, knowing the right aspect ratios to convert your video for web distribution is key.  By choosing the right ratios, you can insure that you will get best picture possible.

Sometimes, you are restricted to the size of a web page window, but you still can choose a better ratio than simply picking one out of the air.

Below is a chart of the best ratios to use.

(Chart compiled by Robert Reinhardt

Good reference, Dave, thanks. However, I was curious as to the numbers in parentheses in the classification headers Best, Better, Good. They were 16, 8, and 4. What is the significance?

Kevin:

Good question. According to Robert Reinhardt of flashSUPPORT.com, when you use web video codecs such as Sorenson Spark and On2 VP6, the best frame dimensions are where the width and height of the frame are divisible by 16. If you can't have both divisible by 16, then the lesser options are divisible by 8, then 4.
